Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were the creative team that invented Superman. Mr. Siegel wrote the stories and dialog. Mr. Shuster drew the pictures.

In 1938, National Comics launched the Superman character in their Action Comics magazine. They made a contract with the creators of the Man of Steel that bought the rights and afforded the two men a comfortable lifestyle for the next 10 years.

After a failed lawsuit, Mr. Siegel found employment with another comic book publisher. A quieter man, Mr. Shuster was less adroit in selling his skill as illustrator. Needing income in the 1950s, he inked drawings for Nights of Horror.

The 16-volume series was the subject of legal action involving a Manhattan bookstore. The mayor’s office prosecuted Kingsley Books for allegedly selling literature that violated decency law. They lost at the trial level and on appeal. A small fine was levied. Only the retailer was pursued. No action was taken against the printer, publisher, writer or artist.

The story of Issue No. 9 has a strong focus on spanking. Nearly every named female character gets spanked by a brutal man.

Claudette enjoys spanking when Emile does it, but she encounters a number of other men who take things too far. For various reasons, she loses her mother, her father, and her step-mother. Alone in the world, she encounters a man who is kind to her, but gets another spanking when his wife finds out.

The prose describes bodies with candor. The plot begins in France and the story includes some French vocabulary.

Claudette's travels and misadventures result in her receiving terrible abuse by sailors. Whip, martinet, rattan, hairbrush, cat and palm accomplish bottom bruising in varied circumstances.

In Portugal, she meets young Florio, who spanks her in the moonlight.

He stroked her bottom and his hand was like a red hot brand against the flesh underneath her panties. Suddenly he lifted his hand and brought it down with a smack. A delicious languor had fallen over her and her whole body was somnolent. But this slap was like a shot of electricity. It coursed through her body like a heady wine. It was pleasant.

She stretched herself out so that her head lay in his lap, her face downward, and seeing that she had not resented his forwardness, he lifted her dress somewhat and smacked her bottom again.

"Keep it up," she said dreamily. "Go on, Florio, it is good."

The boy smacked her again. It was like no other spanking she had received, except from the one pe son in the world she had loved, Emile. She closed her eyes and imagined that this boy was her lover, lie kept smacking and slapping her panties, until rer bottom was lovely and warm and her heart teat with a singing rhythm. She could hardly stand .he joyful pain. The sensation was so good that s le wanted more of it.

She put her hands back and pulled down her panties, so that in the bright light of the moon, her lovely, globular behind shone like two, sunlit hills. It brought an involuntary cry of pleasure to the lips of Florio. There was rapture in it all.

He fingered and fondled the globes and then smacked them, at first slowly, as if to get the feel of that samite flesh, and then because his hand thrilled and throbbed, he brought it down heavier and harder.

"Harder,” she pleaded, still keeping her eyes closed, She took his hand in both of hers and helped him spank her behind with savage force. The very pain was a delight. Here was no cruel flogging such as she had had from the sailors. This was a labor of love. The boy was in love with her, that she could sense in the very manner in which he slapped her. His fingers lingered on her buttocks with adoration. He was so much like her Emile. . . . What harm could there be in letting this young man take his place? She would probably never see Emile again.

All the fingers of his hand left their marks on her beautiful behind. Her bottom was spanked as it had not been spanked in a long time. The welts and ridges brought only tears of joy to her . . . .

The ebook consists of scans of every page of a copy of the first printing of Nights of Horror, No. 9. The quality of printing is spotty on text pages. The ebook shows the layout and print quality of the original.

Mr. Shuster's art appears on 10 pages. All his distressed damsels wear high-heeled pumps and look like they just got a permanent at an avenue beauty parlor.

Illustrations picture scenes from the story with captions. Their placement in the ebook duplicates that of the original, which is misaligned with the narrative.
