The Male Submissive — essay

Illustrated with photographs, the author explains the proliferation of submissive men in the context of changes in female behavior inspired by the feminist movement.

A growing percentage of American males are falling into a pattern of masochism, which may be caused by self-doubt, punishment complexes and accumulated inclinations to passivity with females. The "weakness" of American men is being discussed by many proponents of women's liberation and this has definitely had some effect upon the male self-image. More influencing, however, are the changing morals and views of society concerning sexual behavior.

The male is no longer the prime initiator of sexual advances in today's society. The equality of the sex act is being discussed openly and now there is increasing pressure upon the men to satisfy their wives and lovers. Many researchers feel this increase in pressure has tended to make some men overly conscious and weakened in spirit. There is a new awareness concerning male submission and the search for firm and dominating females. . . .

In another section of the book, Human Sexuality, McCary relates how many masochistic men are afraid of rejection. This fear is so great that the masochist is willing to be subjected to any kind of punishment or humiliation that will win his partner's affection. This craving for acceptance was seen by McCary as the reward for suffering.

As a prerequisite for pleasure, pain is connected with the desired response. The weak male who stresses his own weakness and helplessness is actually appealing to the threatened power that rests on his female partner. McCary noted that masochism in men is often the symbol of self-castration in which others are robbed of the power to castrate because the masochist has already done so.

But the weak male who seeks strong dominant women for sexual satisfaction is also likely to be fixated on his mother and the early example of his parents. In many cases the dominant mother in such a situation consciously or unconsciously has disgust for anything sexual. Although she experiences the normal sexual drives and longings, the inhibition that occurs actually lays the foundation for her tendency towards dominance of her husband and son. Another source of her sadistic impulses may be feelings of inferiority. In her degradation of males, she gets reassurance that she is more powerful and has nothing to fear.

The ebook contains all content of the magazine except the advertising, yielding a .pdf file of 65 pages. (We've seen these ads before.) In pursuit of continuity, page sequence was revised to place color pictures with respective photo sets and to obtain continuity of one prose piece.

Some margins, borders, walls and floors were cropped out. A few page layouts were revised.

Brightness, contrast and levels were adjusted and shadows reduced. Image editing improved the quality of photographs.
