The writer, who sounds British, speaks as though it were a woman's responsibility to present herself in a manner that pleases men. He describes the effects of high heels —

From a purely mechanical/physiological point of view, the high-heel, by putting the woman up and forward on her toes, tends to exhibit to their best those two magnificent muscles in the calf, the gastroenemius and the soleus. A profound nostalgia sweeps over any red-blooded male when he recalls the forward, almost tottering, walk of a well-built woman, the gastroenemius and soleus twitching under a sheer silk stocking and sending the seam of the stocking into tiny heaving spasms with each step. . . .

To return to high-heels and in a more serious and invesigatory tone. That a pair of statuesque heels do, in a manner that is almost a rigid reflection of their height, add authority and dignity to a woman is, I feel, beyond debate. That they set off a woman's gait, give her, literally, a 'poised' appearance that can, in the mind of the adoring male, be translated as poised for either aggression or submission, according to taste, I think equally beyond debate. . . .

. . . . the high-heel must be faced as being somewhat restricting . . . restricting physically, more subtly restricting psychologically. The same might be said of the corset, but the high-heel and the corset, represses here, releases there. Both accentuate normal characteristics. The high-heel gives a delightful, imperious 'totter' to gait, the corset thrusts those mounds that need to be displayed fully into bold relief and by accentuating curves make much of the best of female features. Nature abhors angles, loves curves, so with the corset one could be said to be perhaps impudently suggesting that nature has not gone far enough with women physically, and with high-heels that nature has small understanding of civilized man's subtle erotic regard for a woman's legs. Nature did not visualize women's bodies being covered, and therefore has no understanding of the conception that what can't be actually displayed can, by the art of the shoe designer or couturier, be hinted at with such subtlety that the erotic value is actually rasied rather than diminished.
