Wealthy cattle baron Sam Kersten believes that son-in-law Bob has delivered perverted cruelty upon daughter Angela. While their marital history shows wife and husband in roles reversed from Sam's understanding, Angela maintains the deceit.

She recruits friend Greta to devise suitable punishment for Bob's alleged misconduct. Greta and Bob have had a nasty rivalry over Angela's affections. With Sam covering expenses, beautiful Greta contracts with Mr. Dexter to develop a metallic costume (as shown on the cover) that will enable her to inflict a broad spectrum of sensations — both pleasant and terrifying — while Bob is confined, gagged, blindfolded, sheathed and impaled by the diabolical armor.

At their first meeting, Mr. Dexter explains his assignment —

I have been instructed by my client, Mr. Kersten, to immobilize you, to turn you into a virtual cripple, and to arrange certain — unpleasant and very painful punishments for you. That is my business, and I am very good at it. The best in the world in fact. The other young lady, Miss Greta Bellingham, made the introduction. I have done quite a lot of work for her in the past, you understand. — Now, I have this commission, and I am going to fulfill it, in detail.

The mechanisms Dexter produces and installs wreak an exquisite nightmare of torment for Bob, interrupted by moments of delight. Greta directs most of the scenes in which her captive receives frightening treatment within his suit of horrors.

But Greta aspires to control both ends of the marriage. In one of her diabolical schemes, she orchestrates circumstances that bind Bob and Angela to an arrangement that requires each of them to drive pain into the other in a reciprocating sequence of intimate agony. As first-person narrator, Bob ponders the pleasure/pain continuum.

Angela and I were caught in a circle of mutual pain and pleasure from which, at first we could not, and as our senses became fully aroused, at last we did not want to escape. Pleasure and pain, pain and pleasure, how devilishly well they mix and mingle; one at the very threshold of the other. It needs Pain to take only a step in the right direction for it to become exquisite pleasure. If Pleasure goes more than a step in the other direction, it degenerates into pain. For a long time, Angela and I hovered over the point of balance. First, pain would predominate; then pleasure would reassert itself.

This is how it comes about that people get confused between the two; this is the dawning of masochism.

Mr. Thomas' expert prose takes us on a twisting tour of sadist/masochist dynamics. He describes the vicious protagonist's spectacular figure, and the fetish clothing and footwear that adorn it. His fluency in anatomical detail and sexual sensation animate the narrative.

The text was re-set for the ebook. Few changes were made. 45,000 words.

Twelve excellent Bill Ward illustrations embellish the book with pictures that complement the story. Nearly all relate to scenes described in the novel.

Mr. Ward's sensuous art is optimized on more than 50 pages. Virtual enlargements of image segments expose figure features, action and fetish elements. This presentation technique reduces the need for zooming and scrolling.

As possible, pictures were placed in the ebook near prose that describes them. As some pictures have no related text, they were located near text that has no corresponding art. Not all scenes depicted in the story are shown in the pictures.

Brightness and contrast of images were adjusted. Most appear with clear white backgrounds and lines with smooth edges.

All new scans. Female nudity.

A second ebook shows only the optimized art on more than 50 pages.
