Female Domination Mystique essay
A thoughtful article considers attitudes about which sex is stronger, making many references to the writings of Freud, Adler, Fromm, Horney, Deutsch, and others. The author opines that “experts” generalize about the nature of human sexuality based on their own individual experiences and feelings rather than quantitative research.
How can a male take pleasure in being tormented by a female . . . ? And what sort of aberration would prompt a member of the "weaker" sex to systematically debase and humiliate a member of the "stronger" sex?
Since the advent of modern psychology, experts have theorized endlessly about this sort of perverse behavior, labeling it a particularly twisted type of sadomasochism, hidden homosexuality, etc. It is enlightening to examine the nature of some of these theories, even though they seem to fall far short of explaining their subject.
Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, admitted that the human female was to him something of a "riddle," so he never really was able to come to terms with the phenomenon of female domination. Freud hypothesized without actual clinical evidence but merely though his own powers of reasoning that the female child makes a different sexual adjustment than her male counterpart. He argued that in the crucial childhood years where the infant's erotic instincts may conflict with adult — and often repressed — standards of behavior the little girl invariably develops "penis-envy." Although she goes through the same oral and anal stages as her brother and may also become traumatized by overly rigorous methods of weaning or toilet-training, it is in the genital phase where she realized what must seem to her her inferiority.
As Patrick Mullahy, in his book, Oedipus: Myth and Complex, interprets Freud, the turning away from the mother is a manifestation of the female "castration complex" on the part of the girl child. "The little girl does not lightly get over her 'penis-envy.' For a long time she clings to the possibility of the pressure of reality, does consciously abandon the wish for a penis of her own, it persists unconsciously . . . She accepts castration as an established fact, while the little boy, in the course of his development, dreads its future possibility . . . Her unfavorable comparison with the boy wounds her self-love, causes her to repudiate her love toward the mother, to repress a good deal of her sexuality, and to abandon masturbation."
At this point, Freud says, the girl takes on most of the passive traits that characterize the mature woman. By no longer masturbating and beginning to submit to the father, instead of making insatiable demands upon the mother, she loses much of her aggressiveness, and even the "penis-envy" eventually becomes transformed into the wish for a (male) child — the gift of her father's penis, and thus a surrogate penis of her own.
In conclusion, we may state that we have barely scratched the surface of the complex phenomenon of female domination — over both submissive men and women. Although experts differ about the possible causes which led to the development of such adult personalities, almost invariably the origin would seem to lie in some sort of confusion or frustration of sexual roles. The male wanting to be treated as passive female, the rebellious female defying a cultural imposition of inferiority, seeking to recreate the imaginary phallic mother or merely to compensate for millennia of subordiantion of her kind — all demonstrate at best the variety of human sexual response and at worse the tragic maladjustment of the victims of society's longstanding sexual confusion and suppression.
