The fascination of the Black woman for the White man has long been a part of American culture and the myth of Black sexuality promulgated through the ages by Western man in general. Whereas the Judaic-Christian Ethic was thought to have rendered the White female an object to whom sex was an obligation rather than a pleasure, the Black woman retained (to the White Western mind) a kind of primitive magnetism which had not been conditioned out of her. She was the epitome of passion and fury and restless sensual desires.

It is this concept of Black sensuality which accounted for so many slave-owners treating Blacks as inferior beings on the one hand and taking Black mistresses on the other. To the enlightened mind the double standard of sexual superiority and intellectual inferiority no longer exists.
