Transgender models stimulate cognitive dissonance about erotic fantasy. Except for a single detail, they pose and emote like women who are models. Hair, cosmetics, lingerie, footwear all compare to what female models wear in front of the camera. Not surprising, since the photographer provides costumes and accessories for most of the models with whom he or she works.

Magazines that advertise she-male models who project dominant personae clothe pretty posers in black fetish regalia associated with the idiom. Their stance and visage — and their packaging — mirrors that of women who accomplish the same graphic objective. Except for the persistent intrusion of male indicia in photographs, the pictures appear to be of females.

Shapely figures and feminine countenances seduce us to believe we see women on these pages. But concurrent male anatomy confounds that impression and conflates gender for the viewer, leading to what must be either cognitive compartmentalization or apprehension of characters neither female nor male but of a unique nature. And it seems likely that the appeal of this idiom derives from the bizarre mix of sexual ingredients that forms its uniqueness.
