The contents page has this bit of sentiment in the middle —

I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up
to your expectations, and
You are not in this world to live up to mine.
You are you and I am I, and
if by chance we understand
each other,
It's beautiful.

Sex Change
For those of us who've seen Sidney Lumet's 1975 hit feature Dog Day Afternoon, this issue of The Female Impersonator delivers a peculiar surprise. Based on actual events described in a 1972 Life magazine article, the film tells of a passionate man who robs a Brooklyn bank to obtain the money to buy his trans girlfriend sex reassignment surgery. It's fair to speculate that when the magazine was produced, no one involved had any expectation that the sensational story would become famous through a major motion picture.

Twelve pages show us that girlfriend, nude, with her boyfriend du jour. Exchanging tender kisses and caresses, these affectionate lovebirds bill and coo in a modest bedroom.

Frisco Follies at the Jersey Shore
“ . . . it was a delightful, fun-filled review, created to entertain and amuse everyone. Fast-paced humor, beautiful costumes, exciting sets and a fresh approach to old standards were the keynote.” Performer include Jamie James, Frog, Eddie Mills, and Jack Edwards. Californian Bryan Marshall does amusing impersonations of Connie Francis, Eydie Gorme, Mae West, Pearl Bailey and Judy Garland. With photos of performers on stage, in costume.

Chez Paree in Atlantic City, New Jersey
This mid-town venue hosted the Femme Jesters revue. Starring Des Connors, Emore, Salina Powers, Ronnie Salem and Brian Andrews, the troupe were a great success. With pictures of performers and the entrance to the building.

Mark Tully's Nut Club in Wildwood, New Jersey
The big news was Pudgy Robert's show. The jokester got standing ovations for witty personifications of Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Carol Channing. With pictures of Pudgy in personality costumes, Mark and the building.

The Second National Cotillion in Los Angeles, California
“The second National Cotillion, a combination beauty and talent contest for female impersonators from all over the country, was every bit as big a success as the first one, held in 1971, and gives every promise of becoming an annual event.

“Twenty-five of the top female impersonators from all over the country competed in the contest, held in Los Angeles, Calif. The competition is patterned after the Miss America Pageant, and the contestants are required to compete in bathing suits, evening gowns, and in a four-minute talent routine.

“Top winner this year was Brandy Lee, named "Miss Cotillion - 1972". She replaces Genie Dee, last years reigning queen of female impersonators.” With photos of graceful contestants in evening gowns.

Fall Ball in New York City
Hosted by Frankie Quinn at the Hotel Diplomat, photographs show happy party-goers in feather-festooned dresses. Pictures show Jessie St. John, Frankie, Lee Brewster and Johnny.

Jackie's Ball in Lakewood, New Jersey
“Black is beautiful was the theme of a Valentine's Day Ball held at the Allaben Hotel in Lakewood, N.J. Gorgeous gowns and high-style Afros were the order of the evening as a dazzling array of black T.V.'s vied with each other for the title of belle of the ball. The gala was hosted by Miss Jackie, one of the brightest luminaries on the black female impersonation scene.”

The 64-page periodical offers several articles of interest to cross-dressers. The editor visits a TV boutique in Manhattan. An article announces the Transvestite Information Service in South Carolina. A short piece about Hedy Jo Starr touts her custom costume service in Boston.

A thoughtful essay advises caution in announcing one's trans inclinations to family members. Readers write letters to the editor about their concerns, questions and practices. Venues for dozens of female impersonator shows are listed on three pages. The Meeting Place presents personal ads from TVs with a few snapshots.
