With our first “Ruritanian Discipline” ebook product, we opined that its origins are British. That seems likely in placing the Sheila opus, but there are few indicators.

In the early 1970s, these bondage and punishment stories were reprinted on cards by Candor, Inc., of New York City, successor to Mutrix. They probably first appeared as cards after WWII, distributed through underground channels and sold by under-the-counter retailers.

Each card has a three-part identification region at the top, with a graphic style reminiscent of technical drawing. The title is centered between part (episode) number and page number.

All but a few panels have hand-lettered text that describes the scene in the ink drawing. With simple, sketchy lines that taper to show volume and contour, the artist renders his slender damsels with skill. Pretty faces and elegant curves delineate a ripe, female ideal.

Sheila's parents send their naughty 18-year-old to Miss Summers' Finishing School for Young Ladies. There, she suffers from bondage and corporal punishment. Miss Summers turns out to be John Summers, who often takes his pleasure with the women in his charge after vigorous discipline sessions.

Curriculum seems more like a pretext for Summers to exercise his sadistic whims than a program of instruction or rehabilitation. Nudity and sexy fetish attire belie any institutional formality that mortar-board academic caps can reflect. This ironic element of uniform pretends justification for Summers' self-indulgent cruelty.

In one scene, a woman whips a student attached to a wall. In another, Sheila pulls a sulky as pony girl. A few pictures show Sheila's torso being locked behind the hinged door of a wood box.

Female characters appear in a nice assortment of fetish wear. Boots, pumps, corsets, gloves, belts, and gartered stockings with seams adorn lovely bodies.

Bondage gear includes helmets, cuffs, chains, ropes, weights, stocks, and varied wood contraptions designed for discomfort and accessibility. Whips, straps, crops, canes, clamps and paddles deliver pain.

Ebooks contain all 12 parts of Sheila. Each part consists of 12 pages.

Brightness and contrast were adjusted to show female characters and the details of their attire. Pictures transposed well to ebook format, achieving smooth edges.

Female and male nudity.

The third-person text describes the painfulness of punishments with candor, including details about changes in skin color, texture and heat. It seems likely that the artist also accomplished the prose.

Sheila's face seldom reflects the certain agony of her circumstances. Her gratuitous chastisements appear more as unpleasant surprises than episodes of anguish. Over the course of the story, she comes to expect abuse and misuse with little complaint. With a single male character enjoying pretty women as he pleases, Sheila forms classic male fantasy with strong sadist notes.
