By the late 1970s, Neptune Productions of Belmar, New Jersey published TV Swingers, Drag Scene, SheMale, TV Times and F.I. Newsletter. As an often persecuted, isolated minority, cross dressing men discovered kindred spirits who wore women's lingerie and clothing for pleasure, engaging in sensuous escapades alone and with others while so attired.

Issue 16 of The Female Impersonator makes one reference to femmed entertainers. Pictures and text show transvestites at play, by themselves and with others, as announced on the cover.

The first photo set — Have Cock, Will Travel! — shows a slender brunette in long gloves, garter belt and stockings cavorting in bed with a pretty blond T-V. Accompanying first-person blurbs describe, “ . . . selling my tail to hungry Johns.”

In I'm a Model Girl with Extra Equipment, a cute transsexual describes attractive features of her figure. “I make my living letting men play and lay with my body.”

Shot in a motel room, Motel Shemale presents a male and she-male in affection embrace. “I feel more at home in a motel room than I do with the house that my mother keeps my male clothes in.” Including the photographer, there were three people in the bedroom.

One article expresses appreciation for a female impersonator show named Frisco Follies. Producer-director-designer-performer Jamie James “. . . gives them a show that drag dreams are made of. Big production numbers, the magic of fluff and tinsel, gobs of white-gold blond hair, exotic saris and old-fashioned crinolines.” Talented performers impersonate Barbra Streisand, Connie Francis, Mae West, Pearl Bailey and Sonny and Cher. Illustrated with photographs.

Pages titled Readers Cornered appear throughout the magazine. Skillful amateurs show off their lacy undies and their playmates.

In classified ads, people describe their interests and the kind of person they want to meet. Illustrated with photographs.

The magazine also has a list of TV clubs. An article addresses the subject of shaving. In the letters section, correspondents tell about their experiences with cross-dressing, alone and with partners.

The digital replica contains all content of the 64-page magazine including advertising.

The tonality of photographs was adjusted, shadows reduced and many specks retouched.

All new scans. Male nudity.

After careful work on editing color and monochrome images, most pictures transposed well to the ebook. Some of the original photography lacks professional quality. It appears that 35mm film and cameras were used, yielding images with soft edges when enlarged to fill full-sized magazine pages.

This issue of The Female Impersonator exposes the fun of transvestites at play and their sexual connections. Pictures and prose disclose alternative lifestyles with intimacy and candor.
