We define men's magazine as a periodical with sexy pinup photos, short stories, articles and cartoons. Most also have ads. This template was probably codified by Playboy in 1953.

At 92 pages, the 1973 Rogue Summer Annual has plenty of all requisite components to qualify for this categorization. As it's summery, a few photos are set at the seashore.

With few unpleasant shadows, pictures show the talent of photographers who get the most from each of their models. The lovely ladies seem relaxed, exposing their young curves and neat pubic triangles to the camera.

One set shows a frolic involving body painting and two men. A few shots suggest lesbian intimacy. Except for Sorority Sex Sisters, these pretty women seem to live in a world that has no clothing, undies or footwear, a sexual idiom that offers little to fetishists.

By 1973, American publishers understood that they had license to show nudity and say almost anything, related to sex or otherwise. Rogue exploits this latitude with a slimy shower of smarmy gags. Captions, titles and blurbs knead multiple meanings of words.

One essay provides a review of John & Mimi, a book about a successful open marriage. Other prose pieces provide first-person narratives about an office affair and a swinger club. A short fiction piece describes an adult movie shoot.

Ads offer books, magazines, photographs, sex toys and 8mm films. Many references to Deep Throat.

The digital replica shows all content of the paper magazine. Page sequence was revised to obtain continuity of one prose piece.

Contrast and brightness were adjusted and shadows reduced. Most pictures transpose to ebook format with clarity.

Shapely professional models, the gals of Rogue seem to enjoy being objects of male attention. Sweet and sultry, they flirt with us through the camera lens, serving flirty cheesecake, without the icing.
