This Exotique booklet from 1958 consists of two pieces. One is a short story. The other
a “Photo-Fiction Story.”

The booklet opens with the prose piece. Then, we see photographs. After the last picture, the story continues and concludes.

The Initiation of Pauline by Joss Conrad
Newly wed Letty and Robbin have a cheerful household until he becomes grumpy. Patient Letty wants to work things out and encourages hubby to disclose the source of his discontent.

Eventually, he admits, “ - what I'm trying to say is that I love to feel pretty, feminine things, especially silks, against my skin. . . . I love to have them rub against me.”

Pleased about his preferences, Letty shares her clothes with him and teaches cosmetics. He acquires his own feminine wardrobe. The story includes descriptions of dress-up progressions, specifying fabrics and colors, undergarments, hosiery and high heels.

Two ink and wash illustrations by Gene Bilbrew illuminate the story.

Bound to Please
About 25 photographs suggest conversation between two young women that results in the taller one changing the attire of the smaller one. Ms. Petite appears in a black lace bra, then a ruffled halter. This coordinates with an excellent satin corset to which pale stockings are attached. Make-up is applied and shoes are admired. She briefly poses in strappy platform sandals but winds up with high-heeled pumps.

The ebook presents all content of the booklet in the original page sequence. Brightness and contrast were adjusted and shadows reduced.

All new scans.

Exotique/Burmel products celebrate fetishization of women's clothing, foundation garments, footwear and cosmetics. These publications suggest that, with these items of apparel, women express and demonstrate their femininity. This is so desirable that a man might want to indulge in articles of female presentation, to experience the delights of skin-deep womanhood for himself.

In words and pictures, The Initiation of Pauline explores this theme from two directions and was good work for its day. The ebook preserves obscure mid-century curiosa with clarity and convenience.
