Like Cavalcade of Burlesque, Female Impersonators looks at a slice of show business from the inside. Pudgy Roberts worked as a female impersonator on stages in Chicago, New York and elsewhere. He appeared in motion pictures and wrote The Female Impersonator's Handbook in 1967. Mr. Roberts appears as the editorial director of Female Impersonators and writes about performers and venues with enthusiasm.

Two pictorials show dress-up progressions that demonstrate the transformation process. One piece shows us a bevy of headliners at The Paddock in Atlantic City. They include Lilo, Bobbi Johns, Kismet, Dee Connors, Fat Jack and Jerry Daye.

A Gallery of Greats pictures Hans Crystal, Tobi Marsh, Robin Rogers, Billy Kamp, Bobbi Barton, Joee Roman, Chris Moore and Mr. Jean Fredericks. Other pictorials show us Gypsy Star, Avis, Romi Blue, Ronnie Larsen, and Vicki Monroe.

We learn about a contest in Tokyo at which transvestites compete for the title of Bride of the Ginza. Letters from Readers are accompanied by snapshots. One page provides a list of American cabarets at which female impersonators perform. And no female impersonator magazine would be complete without pictures of party-goers at a drag ball.

The ebook is a full-sized, page-by-page digital replica that retains the page sequence of the original. A few page layouts have been revised slightly to obtain larger pictures of the models. The ebook contains very word, picture and advertisement in the original. Image-editing adjustments improve the clarity of pictures for the digital iteration.

Nostalgia for those who remember those people and places, an introduction for those who never heard of them, Female Impersonators gives us a glimpse of a bygone world of tassels, feathers, sequins, ruffles and glitter. In the 21st century, cross-dressing is more open and popular than ever. The digital replica discloses past-century entertainers who crossed genders before it became fashionable.
