In his page-3 essay, the editor explains his point of view about the magazine —
“We feel that female impersonators are perhaps the least understood performers in the world today. Their art is a demanding one, the talent required immense. . . . Yet those who take the time and trouble to understand the female mimic, his motives and his ability, soon discover that the world of female mimicry is far more complex than they ever imagined.
“Not only is the level of performance extremely high, but when a female impersonator is on stage, the difficulty of performing in a believable manner is increased by virtue of the fact that, in addition to the numbers included in the act, the performer must imitate a female to perfection, as well. As a result, the number of successful female impersonators who reach the top of their profession is relatively few. These men, able to project a fabulous female image, are what we feature in Female Mimics, in an effort to broaden understanding of them and their art.
“We also like to present to you a few of our friends who have perfected the art of female impersonation for their own private enjoyment. These people do not perform or entertain; they simply enjoy the art of dressing like a woman and acting like a woman mostly in the privacy of their own homes, and sometimes they may venture out amongst people and see how well they feel.”
The volume contains photo sets that show the femininity of two recreational cross-dressers: Amanda (on the cover) and Jennifer. Each of these individuals presents with unique style and grace.
An article and adjacent photos disclose the glamour and fun of the 1979 Battle of the V.I.P.'s and Goddess contest. Pictures show contestants in a wide assortment of costumes. Winners are listed.
In other magazines, Linda Lee offered advice to transvestites about cosmetics and attire. Here, she explores the challenges of coming out as transgendered to friends and family. Accompanied by unrelated photographs.
The ebook includes all content of the 48-page original, including advertising and letters to the editor. The sequence of pages and page layouts are unchanged, but most empty margins and gratuitous border graphics were excised.
Brightness and contrast were adjusted and shadows reduced. The pictures transposed well to ebook format.
