Petticoat Boy,
book 9 of
Leslie’s Adventures in Petticoatland
Leslie is in turmoil after being mis-perceived as a pretty girl by a would-be seducer. That night, Marie, the maid, helps him into his nightclothes and a better mood with intimate attention. The next morning, Marie dresses Leslie in a costume suitable for a crosstown bus ride, his first appearance in public as a girl. While traveling to visit Carole, a teenage T-V he met at a boutique, Leslie is fondled by Sabrina, who turns out to be Carole’s big sister. In Carole’s bedroom, the two boy-girls and Sabrina have the loveliest of matinées.

The competent prose was written by Nan Gilbert, an accomplished scribe of many transvestite stories. The text carefully describes the colors and fabrics of all the feminine frillies worn by the cross-dressed characters. Candid accounts of sensuous contact between male and female characters add heat to the narrative.

Ten Gene Bilbrew ink illustrations nicely render both female and male figures. His fluid lines have an almost lyrical quality that blends handsomely with the subject matter they illuminate.

Most pictures approximate scenes in the story and are placed in the sequence of pages near the prose that most closely describes them. Those illustrations that are apparently borrowed from other works are clustered at the end of the ebook.

Transvestite School
Donnie, Robert (who becomes Bobbie), Richard (who becomes Dickie), Gene and Josie find themselves being taught how to be more womanly by Terrie, teacher at a unique school for men with unusual inclinations. The finely written prose gives us a spectrum of transgender interests, as personified by the femmes in the class. One wants to be a girl all the time. One wants to dress in feminine underwear and wear it under his male attire. One man is there at the whim of his dominating mistress, who enjoys humiliating him. One wants to be the kind of pretty thing who attracts men. Terrie provides a sympathetic ear and insightful counsel for the assorted dreams of her students.

Based on a reprint, the ebook modifies the sequence of pages to position the 10 pictures near the text that approximately describes them. Mr. Bilbrew’s ink drawings do a nice job of depicting voluptuous female figures and shapely legs, which sometimes appear in stockings and heels.

Trans-Lez Bondage
The strange institution that serves as the setting for Trans-Lez Bondge is described in the second paragraph: "The House of 1000 Horrors was the stronghold of a cult [of sadists and masochists] so bizarre that its activities defied classification . . . There was no weirdness too strange to be part of the everyday activities of denizens of the Castle."

The text summarizes freaky characters:

Transvala was a male but was in no way a man. Except for his beard and bodily hair, his body was in the tone and condition of skin more female than male, and his hair was a long and lustrous mass of black tresses that fell halfway down his back. His sharp nails were feminine, and his face was that of a girl. . . . he preferred to think of himself as a woman, and usually made love to girls as a male lesbian, one girl to another.”

“ . . . the Countess tortured everyone . . . clawing into their weaknesses and degrading them.” She had special uses for her dog and occasionally enjoyed being whipped.

“The thought of a visit from the Devil-Doll filled them all with terrors as well as with an all consuming slavish desire to grovel in her presence, to let her magnetism and her cruelty rule over them in the most frightful . . . ways.” Devil-Doll’s menagerie included snakes, a crocodile, rodents and bats, animals she trained to torture captives in her lair. She had a special fondness for whipping buxom blond women.

Sid was a drunken bum, who the Countess treated as an all-purpose slave.

Irene and Fluffy were beautiful blond targets.

On the day Devil-Doll visits the Castle for her periodic inspections and punishments, Transvala decides to imprison and impersonate her. Rory, another resident transvestite, recognizes the disguise. When the Countess learns of the treachery, Transvala pays dearly for his transgressions.

This illustrated story has about 25 pages of text and 25 full-page illustrations by Gene Bilbrew near the end of his career. His smooth lines traced the soft curves of women and transvestites in the 1960s. In 1972, his rough rendering of these peculiar characters, and their sinister surroundings, have a dark, spiky quality that appropriately captures the grotesque cruelty of the narrative.
