Mr. Burtman published High Heels magazine in Manhattan as a Selbee product throughout the 1960s. In 1970, he launched New High Heels with a new nameplate, the first title under his Goldstripe ribbon, which would soon work its way to California.

The second issue in the new series lives up to its name. Although the cover shows an old photo of Toni Troy, she is not found inside. [See the Stocking Parade 4 ebooks for a great Toni Troy pictorial.] New pictorials, possibly photographed in California, feature curvaceous models in stockings and true high heel (i.e., five inch) footwear. Pretty posers wear zippered and laced knee-high boots, spike-heeled pumps and unusual sandals.

One short story is introduced by an old Gene Bilbrew drawing. Six watercolor pictures comprise the wordless sequence titled The English Riding Academy. Filler photos from the old days on a few pages.

The digital replica presents the pages with few modifications to original layouts. Page sequence has been revised slightly for convenience and continuity. Ads have been rotated and re-formed to fit ebook pages.

The optimized version focuses not on printed pages but on individual pictures. Optimized pages are wide rectangles that match the aspect ratio of screens. Each photograph or illustration has been proportioned to fill the screen from top to bottom. Enlargements of details are placed beside the complete figure or on the following ebook page. Design considerations anticipate the curiosity of the viewer and are intended to reduce the need for zooming and scrolling.

Tonality of photos was adjusted, specks and blemishes retouched and shadows reduced. In some cases, multiple filters were applied to eliminate moiré patterns. In the optimized version, a few of the smallest pictures show halftone dot patterns, graininess or soft edges.

Digital techniques deliver a viewing experience superior to that of the original paper magazine. These ebooks provide an enhanced digital venue for enjoyment of 20th century images.

Two e-books, a digital replica and an optimized version, delivered by download from your 30th Street Graphics account. These are large files: 54mb and 72mb.
