In the 1960s, about half of Mr. Burtman’s magazines were distributed by a company called All States, out of Chicago. By 1966, All States was bankrupt and disappeared, owing Mr. Burtman $180,000. The financial crisis resulted in a new alliance with Reuben Sturman of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Sturman is generally recognized as the covert publisher or distributor of most of the adult magazines in the US from 1960 through 1990. Robert Blue called him “the King of Porn.” Unique World reflects the continuing connection between Mr. Sturman and Mr. Burtman, after his California migration, with ads for magazines by mail order out of Cleveland.

Unique World is the direct descendant of Bizarre Life magazine, both of which were published by Leonard Burtman. Mr. Burtman had a practice of re-using the product of photo sessions.

Unique World presents photo narratives of dominant females in fetish leather, engaged in corporal punishment. Volume 3, Number 3 has three photo-fiction pieces that picture women hurting a man:

• Scolding the Scholar
• Violent Visit
and
• Sisters of Domination.

Angry sadists show off lovely figures in knee-high boots, thigh-high boots, high-heeled pumps, stockings, corsets and long gloves. The last of these shows Uschi Digart in concert with an exotic Amazon, whipping a male on the carpet and poking him with their heels. Lots of lip service in all three.

Two pictorials show models solo. Both wear shoes and boots, leather dresses, corsets and stockings.

An illustration by the great Bill Ward introduces one short story. The initial episode of Gene Bilbrew's comic serial Beneath Her Boot appears on five pages. An essay pretends to tell case histories of Women Who Dominate Men.

A page-by-page digital replica
All content in the 72-page magazine is in the large-format ebook, including ads. The tonality of photographs was adjusted and spots re-touched. The sequence of pages was revised to place prose pieces on consecutive pages. Some page layouts were changed slightly to obtain larger pictures on ebook pages. Some of the carpets, window coverings, and furniture were cropped out to obtain larger images of the models. Due to these modifications, the ebook provides a viewing experience superior to that of the paper version.

Optimized for ebook viewing
The optimized version is based on pictures, not pages. Each picture is positioned on a separate, wide ebook page. Except for the smallest photos, all pictures fill the screen from top to bottom. The model is shown complete, and fetish details, such as corsets, stockings and footwear, are enlarged beside the complete image or on another page. The optimized ebook shows the tableau within each picture, and the models’ pretty figures, much better than the old paper. Photographs have been ordered to present continuous narrative sequences, as their content permits.

Bonus Material
Photographs and illustrations from Unique World, Volume 3, Number 3, fill more than 120 optimized ebook pages. These images are supplemented by pictures from Boots & Leather, Volume 8, Number 2 (1977) and one set from an issue of Exotique which we received without cover. Most of the supplemental content consists of solo beauties in boots of assorted lengths.
