At the end of the 1950s, Exotique and New Exotique magazines were embroiled in multiple legal fights. About 1960, Mr. Burtman launched Masque magazine, which serves as the functional continuation of Exotique, but with a new title. Both digest-sized magazines had color cover illustrations, fetish fiction, photographs of women in long leather gloves, corsets, stockings and high heels, illustrations by Gene Bilbrew and Eric Stanton, and 64 pages.

In this, the last of the series, we find excellent photographs of sexy models in fishnets, stockings, leather dresses, leather shorts and black mules with white, five-inch heels. Two photos just show shoes. Several illustrations by Messrs. Bilbrew and Stanton.

Beautifully produced, Masque, Number Four, has four pieces of fantasy prose.
In “Footwear to Fit Your Fancy,” Beatrice describes her wardrobe of high heels, naming them after her moods: anger, stubborn, relaxation and jealousy.

Fiction by Evelyn Adams also appeared in Maid to Please and The Wicked Three. For this volume, Marie makes “A Visit to Madame Nanette.” At this upscale specialty salon, the Madame replaces Marie’s pedestrian attire with elegant fetish undies, a figure-trainer and boots.

The two other stories have transvestite themes. In Walter Evans’ “The Show Must Go On,” Dynamic Diana is too ill to perform on opening night. Bobby Bender is recruited to appear in her stead, but must first be dressed as a woman. The texture, quality and fit of every garment is carefully described.

Apparently, Lorenzo Chieco wrote on many aspects of the transvestite experience. His prose appeared in Exotique, Panty Raid, and Transvestism . . . Men in Female Dress. In his first-person story “Panty Punishment,” Janet catches Don, her fiancée, with the ladies underwear she had just pinned to her clothes line. She decides he should be punished for taking items that don’t belong to him. In lieu of a spanking, she has him dress in women’s undergarments, which Don obviously enjoys.

Masque, Number Four, is presented in two ebook formats. A digital replica presents content page-by-page, in the original sequence. Some page layouts were revised to obtain larger pictures.

The optimized ebook contains only the pictures of the original. Each drawing and photograph is positioned on a wide ebook page that presents images that fill the screen from top to bottom. Precious fetish details, such as corsets, legs and footwear, are repeated beside the complete figure or on the following page.

Page sequence was revised to cluster pictures of each model on succeeding pages. The first class photography required only minor retouching of specks. Tonality was adjusted. More than 35 pages in the optimized version.

Just as Exotique magazine spun off one shot booklets containing stories or essays, several Masque titles were published during it brief lifespan. Without words, Satan’s Sorority describes three dress-up progressions with full-pages photographs. The first two models wear superior corsets, whose garter straps are attached to full-fashioned stockings.

The first half of the book shows us the sultry redhead and pixieish brunette helping each other into satin corsets, and leather dresses. One wears high-heeled mules while the other zips herself into high-heeled boots.

Then, the pledge arrives. She removes her street dress and shoes, which are replaced by a short white blouse and high-heeled sandals with many straps. A black fabric scarf is tied around her eyes as blindfold. In the finale, the pledge get wet in the bathtub.

The ambitious photography offers a subtle palette of grays, with mostly room lighting and few unpleasant shadows. Many specks and spots were retouched and tonality adjusted. The pictures in the original are large, each one filling a page to the edges. The layout of the original yields a digital replica that resembles an optimized ebook as images of the models fill the screen from top to bottom, but here, on mostly tall pages.
