Newspaper vendors began selling Gala magazine in the 1950s, when no nudity was shown. By the time this 1970 edition appeared, toplessness was common in feature films, night clubs, the legitimate theater and pinup magazines. As a long-running nameplate with established readership, Gala was well-positioned to exploit the social latitude of the tumultuous 1970s and its new acceptance of nudity as factor of American culture.
Fourteen pages and the back cover are nothing but advertising and ads appear on 9 other pages of the 84 in this issue. In other words, business was good.
Inspired, in part, by pin-ups, young men of all ages had fought the good fights overseas. They earned the right to see women naked.
And there appears to have been no shortage of cheerful gals who were willing to doff blouse and bra and show off their assets by the swimming pool, in the living room, the bedroom or outdoor wilderness. Pretty posers include Myra Bain, Deborah Downey, Annette Diamond, Flo Janess, Gail Gillman, Maggie Jerome, Thea Fields, Vicky Martin, and Lynne Redden.
One article shows stills from the feature film Girls in Jail. Cutlines say, “Most girls in jails are prosties who know all the ins and outs of sex . . . female guards are as sadistic as men when they have the whip hand . . . new girl scarred for life by lusty lesbian . . . .” All the shapely inmates are shown topless.
The longest feature, How They Swing at a Nudie Wing-Ding!, shows happy party-goers in panties. In another piece, attractive Marsha poses in an assortment of hats.
The digital replica shows all content of the paper magazine in the original page sequence. Some page layouts were revised to retain photographs at full-size. Contrast and brightness were adjusted and specks re-touched. Although the picture files used to make the ebook are all original scans, some film patterns appear when zooming-in on photos. When pages are viewed full-size, all textures are smooth.
Shapely professional models, the gals of Gala seem to enjoy being the objects of male attention. Sweet and sultry, they flirt with us through the camera lens, serving homey cheesecake, without the icing.
