In the 1960s, about half of Mr. Burtman’s magazines were distributed by a company called All States, out of Chicago. By 1966, All States was bankrupt and disappeared, owing Mr. Burtman $180,000. The financial crisis resulted in a new alliance with Reuben Sturman of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Sturman is generally recognized as the covert publisher or distributor of most of the adult magazines in the US from 1960 through 1990. Robert Blue called him “the King of Porn.” Unique World, Three, reflects the continuing connection between Mr. Sturman and Mr. Burtman, after his California migration, with ads for magazines by mail order out of Cleveland.

Unique World is the direct descendant of Bizarre Life magazine, both of which were published by Leonard Burtman. While Mr. Burtman had a practice of reusing the product of photo sessions, circulating them among his titles, this issue appears to have all new content.

Unique World presents photo narratives of dominant females in fetish leather, physically punishing a man or another woman. Photographs show pretty models in boots and pumps, holding whips. While stockings abound, half are knitted of stretch fiber (agilon?), which was a popular hosiery technology of the 1970s. Although the first Foto-Feature — Lashed and Loved — shows one woman dominating another, other Foto-Features — Harassed Husband, Imperious Housewife, Tortured and Trained, Whipped into Shape, and Booted Dominatrix — show one or two women dominating a man. A common disciplinary ritual in this grouping involves boot licking.

The issue offers an exceptional portfolio of diverse illustrations. Gene Bilbrew's “Dominate Damsel” tells the story of a man who dresses as a maid to please his demanding girlfriend. Eleven Bill Ward drawings illustrate the Taming of a Husband story. Restrained in Rubber narrates 10 classic bondage illustrations by Ripp. But the complete Ripp set is at least 24 pictures and the optimized ebook includes additional Ripp designs not shown in the magazine.

The original 100-page magazine is presented in a large-format ebook. The tonality of photographs has been adjusted and specks re-touched. The sequence of pages has been revised slightly to arrange short story text on consecutive pages. Some page layouts have been revised slightly to obtain larger pictures of the models on ebook pages. In so doing, some of the carpets, window coverings, walls and furniture have been cropped out. Due to these modifications, the ebook provides a viewing experience that is superior to that of the original paper version.

Optimized for ebook viewing
The optimized version is based on pictures, not pages. Each picture is positioned on a separate, wide ebook page, and most fill the screen from top to bottom. The model is shown complete, and fetish details, such as corsets, stockings and footwear, are enlarged beside the complete image or on another page. In the original, many photos are small (three inches in height), sometimes arranged seven to a page. The smaller pictures are included at their original size. The optimized ebook reveals the scenarios of these pictures in a reasonable sequence. All illustrations are clustered, one-to-each-page, at the end of the optimized version.

Issue three offers a banquet of sexy models in fetish boots and shoes, putting wayward men in their place. The optimized ebook provides a convenient album of femdom imagery that reduces the need for zooming and scrolling and anticipates the curiosity of the viewer.
