At the same time Mr. Ward produced illustrations for Hilbarth's Tortura Press novels, he also illuminated Eros Goldstripe's Bizarre Book series. This means he created hundreds of pictures for paperback novels every month of the early 1970s, as well as numerous drawings for diverse magazines.

With a sustained level of excellent quality throughout his prodigious output, it's understandable that all comments about this artist begin with the appellation Great, i.e., the Great Bill Ward.

After wealthy Winston Sisk marries beautiful Nina, they build a castle on a Caribbean island, and collect an army of dedicated young women to protect them from intruders. Queen Nina serves as supreme ruler and King Winston her subordinate. Armella serves her queen as assistant and paramour.

General Nancy accuses Cadet Betty of abandoning her post without proper notification. Convinced by evidence, Queen Nina finds Betty guilty and enforces awful penalties, despite protests of innocence. Later, Nina sees General Nancy mistreating a soldier and then discovers her role in a conspiracy against Betty. Nancy endures multiple ordeals and disappears. A news team intrudes under cover of night. They endure painful abuse and disappear.

Punishments include hand spanking, whip, crop, needles, bondage, and incarceration. Sadist fantasy twists around episodes of lesbian liaison. A few scenes involve a woman and a man.

Mr. Devlin creates a nearly-plausible world with cinematic vitality. His concept and character dynamics betray the characteristics of a genuine novel. He spends time describing details of torture, as the title of the book specifies. Sex scenes are dramatized with care. At 44,000 words, this novel is longer
than others.

In the original, 10 chapters tell the story, and an illustration follows the last page of each. The digital replica duplicates that design. In addition, as possible, enlarged segments of each of the 10 pictures are placed near the prose they picture. Illustration appears on about 30 pages.
