When we read between lines on the editorial page of the premiere issue, we may infer that famous entertainer and writer Pudgy Roberts has won an argument with the publisher (Health Knowledge, Inc.) over short-comings in Female Mimics magazine. His prize: the editorship of a new publication, Female Impersonators, where he can steer content from a professional's viewpoint and provide authoritative how-to info.

In the first issue of Female Impersonators, pretty stripper Bunny Lake explains the rules for donning female apparel. In his article titled The Secrets of Being a Professional, Mr. Roberts extols the benefits of hard work, honesty, punctuality and persistence while developing a career in the entertainment business. In another piece, he appears in a series of photographs that depict the installation of his “personally designed one piece falsie.”

Jamie Lynn enjoys success as hair dresser to stars, men's clothier, actor, and female impersonator. He's shown in male garb and in a shiny gown and complex wig. A multi-talented entertainer, Russell Smith is billed as Miss Lori Lee when impersonating Mae West and Tallulah Bankhead in nightclubs.

One article shows contestants in furs, feathers, sequins, ruffles, ribbons and chiffon, vying for the title of Miss Fire Island 1969. A related piece shows scenes from The Queen, a film that documents rehearsals and preparations for the All-American Beauty Contest of 1967 at New York's Town Hall.

In Gallery of Greats and elsewhere in the magazine, we see single pictures of Chickee Ramos, Kim August, Robin Rogers, Tish, Moorish Stevens, Holli White, Georgia Wolf-Shelia, topless Roxanne, Brandy Alexander, Trini Seville, Crystal, Fran Levine, Karyl Houston, Bobbi Paris, Dean Harlowe, Leslie Marlowe, Joie Tone, Toni Lee, Billy Daye, Minette and Mark Vickers.

Letters from Readers are accompanied by snapshots. One page provides a list of American cabarets at which female impersonators perform.

The ebook is a full-sized, page-by-page digital replica that retains the page sequence of the original. Every word, picture and advertisement is in the ebook. Image-editing adjustments improve the clarity of pictures for the digital iteration.

In the 21st century, cross-dressing is more open and popular than ever. Nostalgia for those who remember those people and places, an introduction for those who never heard of them, Female Impersonators gives us a glimpse of a bygone world in which men show off their femininity on-stage. With clarity and convenience, the full-sized digital replica presents gifted, past-century performers who created glittering female illusions with charm and grace.
