Optimized graphic novel – an added value feature
In the 1960s, about half of Mr. Burtman’s magazines were distributed by a company called All States, out of Chicago. By 1966, All States was bankrupt and disappeared, owing Mr. Burtman $180,000. The financial crisis resulted in a new alliance with Reuben Sturman of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Sturman is generally recognized as the covert publisher or distributor of most of the adult magazines in the US from 1960 through 1990. Robert Blue called him “the King of Porn.” Unique World, Number 4, reflects the continuing connection between Mr. Sturman and Mr. Burtman, after his California migration, with ads for magazines by mail order out of Cleveland.
Unique World is the direct descendant of Bizarre Life magazine, both of which were published by Leonard Burtman. While Mr. Burtman had a practice of reusing the product of photo sessions, circulating them among his titles, this issue appears to have all new content, probably created within the year that preceded its 1972 Summer publication.
Unique World presents photo narratives of dominant females in fetish leather, physically punishing a man or another woman. About half of the photographs show pretty models in boots and wigs, holding whips. While stockings abound, half are knitted of stretch fiber (agilon?), which was a popular hosiery technology of the 1970s. Photo features and illustrated fiction also present fetishism, transvestitism, female impersonation and male domination themes.
DANGEROUS CLIENT
A woman with “sadistic lusts”, Karen drugs a man, then gags and whips him. As seen in High Heels 12, cover girl Darlene Morrow again models two-tone, lace-up boots, this time with a red satin corset, after changing out of stylish pumps.
SCHOOL FOR PUNISHMENT
In this short story, the “flawless beauty” of Sue Carlson, as presented in corset and high-heeled boots, overwhelms previously incorrigible teenage boys. Her fetish appeal so captures their attention that they volunteer to be punished by their sexy teacher. One excellent illustration.
THE WILLFUL WIFE
In this long photo narrative, Carlos spanks Susan, his disobedient wife. When her sister Mona arrives, she knows exactly how to correct his bad habits. The two lovelies strip down to garter belts, stockings and heels and whip his nakedness with cat–o'–nine–tails lashes. Many color photographs.
TRANSVESTITE IN PAIN
Illustrated with a dozen, fetish-filled ink drawings, this story tells of luscious Lorna who discovers her younger brother wearing her clothes. After she whips him into submission, she and a friend obtain sexual services from Bruce. Through a peephole into their bedroom, Lorna demonstrates that their parents also enjoy kinky fun. Bruce sees his mother in corset and boots while punishing her husband.
A PICTURE OF DOMINATION
“Cleo, a busty female impersonator, is the picture of domination.” Jason, her favorite photographer, “knows that Cleo is more than likely to become carried away when she’s posing . . . [and again] becomes the victim of Cleo’s sadistic passions.” After stepping out of her leather dress, she whips him in boots, stockings, long gloves and leather corset. The photography shows a convincing illusion.

A page-by-page digital replica
Most [see below] of the original 100-page magazine is presented in a large-format ebook. The tonality of photographs has been adjusted and specks re-touched. The sequence of pages has been revised to arrange short story text on consecutive pages and position photographs of a set together. For example, the back cover comes from a photo set that begins on page 16 and appears only on page 24 of the ebook. Some page layouts have been revised slightly to obtain larger pictures on ebook pages. Some of the carpets, window coverings, walls and furniture have been cropped out to obtain larger images of the models. Due to these modifications, the ebook provides a viewing experience that is superior to that of the original paper version.
Optimized for ebook viewing
The optimized version is based on pictures, not pages. Each picture is positioned on a separate, wide ebook page, and fills the screen from top to bottom. The model is shown complete, and fetish details, such as corsets, stockings and footwear, are enlarged beside the complete image or on another page. In the original, many photos are small (less than three inches in height), sometimes arranged seven to a page. The optimized ebook reveals the scenarios of these pictures, and the models’ pretty figures, much better than the old paper. In some of the smallest photographs, the edges are a bit soft or show a moiré pattern.
Optimized graphic novel – an added value feature
In order to properly present photography, most Burtman magazines were printed on clay-coated paper. The center pages of both Bizarre Life and Unique World magazines were often printed on heavier, colored, wove paper, which has a rougher texture. An acceptable surface for personal ads, illustrations and fiction, such as “Miss Marchant’s Diary of Discipline,” this was a money-saving tactic.
The center 16 pages of Unique World, Number 4 are printed on heavy, wove stock, goldenrod in color. These pages carry the anonymous short story “Transvestite in Pain” and the 12 pictures that illustrate it.
The text and images were scanned separately. The text was edited and re-set for the ebook and pictures were positioned close to the prose that describes them. For those with appropriate hardware, Adobe Acrobat Reader can be used to read the story out loud [click View>Read Out Loud].
The result is a volume that resembles a graphic novel in form, but which is smaller (5400 words) in size. In addition, the pages are optimized to make the most of the illustrations. Some readers will find similarities between this transvestite-discovered story and Mutrix booklets.
