It's likely that authors' names on Bizarre Books are pseudonyms. There is no Mistress Alma, but designing a novel as the work of a 20th century dominatrix permits the writer to present events from the female character's viewpoint.

In the first-person narrative, Mistress Alma mentions her humble beginnings and describes first encounters with masochists that lead her to believe she can develop a career hurting and insulting people who want it so bad that they will pay for it. As events develop for her, she creates a business that satisfies the desires of masochists and others. She enjoys the work.

She learns a lot from Harry Stevens, her first devotee. Working in a bar, she expects all men to want sex. But Harry wants her to dress up in fetish attire and spike heels and whip him. He's excited about her service and rents a house for her, which he visits on business trips. The following describes the kind of abuse that Harry craved:

"Why don't you start by coming over here and licking my shoes, Harry," I ordered, a cold, hard tinge to my voice. "I got them all dusty walking over here. I want you to clean them with your tongue . . . make them nice and shiny again."
