Although published in the form of a magazine, Erotic Symbolism is more like a non-fiction book with photographs. The contents describe a number of fetishes identified in chapter titles:

• Undergarment Fetishism

• Fabric and Clothing Fetishism

• Fur and Leather Fetishism

• Rubber Fetishism

• High Heel and Boot Fetishism

• Body Fetishism

• Foot Fetishism

• Buttock Fetishism

• Breast Fetishism

• Genitalia Fetishism

The page-three editorial offers this definition:

Usually, the fetish object, whether it be a pair of shoes or a breast, is a substitute for the genitalia of the opposite sex, and it is the object itself, not the genitals, that arouse the fetishist sexually.

Most chapters include a case history, intended to dramatize the psychology of the practice. Joe's story appears in the Fabric and Clothing Fetishism chapter.

Joe P., a successful corporate lawyer, has a fabric fetish that is somewhat complicated. Fortunately, he met a woman who is able to understand his needs and is able to satisfy him, as well as herself, in the process.

On Friday nights when Joe comes home from work, his wife meets him at the door dressed as a cowgirl in a mini skirt and vest made of denim, and elaborate silk, Western shirt decorated with rhine-stones, boots and spurs, and a red bandana tied around her neck. It is the bandanna that is the object of Joe's fetish, but the rest of the outfit is necessary to create the proper ambiance.

"Howdy Joe, you old fart!" she greets him, giving him a lewd and juicy smack on the lips while tearing at his clothes like a wanton hussy. "My Lord! If you aren't the sexiest stud that's come down the pike all day!"

Joe's reaction to her foul language and whorish behavior is an immediate erection. He slaps her butt and violently grabs a clump of her hair, then passionately kisses her eager, rubied lips, rubbing his five-o'clock [stubble] over her tender facial skin.

"Not so rough, boy! I'm not some goddamned fuck machine!" she pushes him away, but he grabs her and knocks her to the floor.

"No bitch is going to tell me what to do!" he says gruffly, then yanks her skirt up around her waist and shoves his fist up between her legs. She screams and thrashes around, trying to escape him, but he always overcomes her and muffles her screams by using the bandana as a gag. He then procedes to kiss her mouth and the bandanna simultaneously.

The bandanna, as we said before, is the actual object of Joe's fetish, and the scenario so far is only a lead up to the moment when it is tied around her mouth so that he can kiss and touch his wife and it at the same time. Thus, he increases his pleasure by satisfying his fetishistic impulses while indulging in sexual foreplay. Sometimes he varies the action by using the bandanna to bind her, usually by roping it around her crotch. There he also kisses it as well as sucks the juices it soaks up from her aroused sex.

The actual climax of this Friday night ceremony, however, comes when Joe's wife knots the bandanna around his penis, where it serves as a sort of cloth cockring. With the bandana in place, they procede to have sexual intercourse. Aside from the obvious stimulation of copulation, the feeling of the bandanna caressing the intimate parts of their bodies while they are making love increases their excitement many-fold. While this ritual may seem bizarre, both participants derive pleasure from the activity, each claiming that they wouldn't have it any other way.

Joe became deeply attached to red bandannas as a child, when, during the summertime, he would visit his grandmother in rural Oklahoma. His own parents were repressed New Englanders, but his uncle, a rather crude man who drank a lot, would take him into town Friday nights while his grandmother was at a church meeting and show him the earthy, if not seamy, side of life. There, Joe saw the bawdy women who serviced the hardworking, hard-drinking, hard-playing men who were eager to spend their pay checks for pleasure. Many wore red bandannas, and Joe came to associate that item with sex. Since his own proper upbringing didn't allow him to approve of what he saw, he came to ritualize his feelings by subverting them into a bandanna fetish.
