The author manages his sentences with impressive skill, dragging us through a dark underworld of violent sexuality. On an island, the Moriarty family institutionalized sadistic horror on their Torture Farm. We're made to understand that the torment of others works as foreplay for the family; to witness others in pain stimulates them. Hurting people makes the family feel fulfilled and realized.
Although crafted by a skillful writer, the style suggests that this may have been his first pornographic novel. As it originated in early 1970s, be aware that characters use expressions like groovy and out of sight.
An example, describing one of the new “slaves” —
The girl hung by her wrists from a beam set into the low ceiling, her ankles trapped in iron shackles that fastened to two ring bolts. The girl shivered and shuddered under the terrifying study of the horrible woman in sadist regalia. She was stunned and shocked by the events that had brought her to her present dilemma, and could not imagine how so terrible a sequence of criminal conditions could be wrought upon an innocent such as herself. She had been kidnapped, raped, and tortured by lunatics in strange outlandish costumes right out of a cheap 42nd Street porno book.
Irma Moriarty, also known as Ma, also known as Black Widow, buys and uses slaves for the entertainment of her anonymous clients and herself. She treats her spawn — Francis, Pamela and Roger — only a little better than her helpless captives. Her husband Conrad lives in a locked cell. Nobody makes a fuss about incest. It's best to obey Mama.
The theme weaves wanton brutality around impulsive sexuality. Scenes stretch all boundaries beyond the breaking point. Text provides vivid descriptions of vicious physical abuses.
Scenes contain the usual equipment: whips, crops, dildos, gags, cuffs, chains. But these sadists go steps further with spiked tables, cigarettes, needles, pliers and fingers.
Every orifice endures abuse with objects, anatomy and noxious substances. It's a farm.
The text was re-set for the ebook iteration. Some sentences and paragraphs were divided into two. Some redundant modifiers were eliminated. Generally, the ebook retains the style and dissonant charm of the writing.
Most professionals set the minimum length of a novel at 50,000 words. Most novels in the the Tortura Press and Bizarre Books series are about 40,000 words. Spanker's Delight is 30,000 words.
Editors of these series specify that prose length must fill 192 pages. This quantity is necessitated by arrangements made with the printer. But if the manuscript comes in at 30,000 words, it's possible to make adjustments in book design. Use a larger typeface. Expand top and bottom margins. Leave pages blank around illustrations and between chapters. These techniques were applied to make Spanker's Delight into a paperback.
Ten drawings by Gene Bilbrew illuminate the text. Each tableau shows two characters but one pair seems to be characters from another story. His smooth lines show skill and confidence. He characterizes Mr. Whippey, a paying customer at the farm, as a froggish, neckless troglodyte.
His pictures show the kind of torment described by the prose. But his precise ink renderings don't always depict scenes as described. He may not have read every word in the manuscript. As possible, pictures were placed close to related text, but few scenes are pictured.
Each picture is optimized to fill screens with complete scenes and virtual enlargements. The optimized presentation technique intends to reduce the need for zooming and scrolling. Pictures appear on 30 pages.
