InFemale Mimics, we meet men who entertain professionally, singing, dancing and telling jokes on the stages of cabarets. In the ninth issue, many large photographs show the lovely charmers at New York’s Crazy Horse Café in Greenwich Village. We’re introduced to Crazy Horse headliners Tish, Kicks Wilde, Billie Kamp, Joey Baker, and Dena Grevis, who the editor compares to Elizabeth Taylor. On stage they show off their feathers, frills and glitter while backstage they drink coffee and smoke cigarettes in wigs, earrings and makeup.

Other featured pictorials show the most feminine of men at home, putting on faces, wigs, undies and sparkling stage costumes, posing en femme for the camera. These glamorous stars include Tammy Novack, Moorish Stevens, and Bunny Garland. Fetish-oriented Randy Taylor camps it up behind the front door of Mr. Burtman’s Manhattan apartment in leather dress, high-heeled boots and full-fashioned stockings.

Full-page publicity photos of notable impersonators fill about a dozen pages. These include Baby Martell, Nicki Gallucci, Hans Crystal, Minette, Harvey Lee and others.

Accompanied by Eric Stanton’s iconic clip art, Carlson Wade contributes part one of an essay titled “The Golden Age of Female Impersonation”. He begins his history in ancient times, quoting from the Bible, describing the feminization of Hercules and Samson. He reminds us of mumming, a traditional cross-gender cross-dressing festivity of the Yule season. He also refers to famous cross-dressers of the Renaissance and subsequent periods.

The ebook is close digital replica with 72 large pages. Some page layouts were revised to obtain larger pictures. The tonality of photos was adjusted and many specks retouched. The pages sequence was revised slightly to achieve continuity in Mr. Wade’s prose. The covers and two interior pages are in color. All the prose and picture content of the original are included in the ebook, including ads.
