The prose and pictures of The Garden of Delicate Torments were probably created around 1960 by someone living in France. The original version was written in French, probably for a wealthy collector. Although usually attributed to Bernard Montorgeuil, that name is fiction, invented by a publisher in Rotterdam.
The French text was translated into German for a 1970 edition. That version was translated into English for the American edition of 1984, which presented the four illustrated stores in three volumes.
The four narratives describe sexual episodes in which young men are tormented, physically and sexually. All involved have volunteered to be in the bizarre circumstances which the tales chronicle.
“The Four Thursdays”
Seventeen-year-old Jean-Louis sees a woman on the street and follows the beautiful lady to a riding academy. He is astonished by her pride, bearing, and clothing, and starts to follow her every day. When she appears in his own living room, she is introduced as his aunt. Before they ever speak, he develops an obeisant attitude toward Madame de Varennes, and decides that he is in love with her.
When they are alone, she rebuffs his passion. She rewards his persistence with a whipping delivered by her maid while the young man is silenced with a scarf in his mouth. She congratulates his arousal with ridicule.
Her motivation in deflowering the youth and introducing him to bizarre sex is revenge against his family, from which she has been estranged for 12 years. She introduces him to Aunt Frieda, who has many uses for a handsome young man. The text describes formats of sexual contact and sadistic behavior.
“An Afternoon with Barbara”
The story begins with this introduction: “It was in the vicinity of Hamburg, that cosmopolis where the most peculiar passions vent themselves most freely-to be precise, in the famous ‘Amazon House’ of Dr. Mrs. Gutlieb. All sorts of mistresses who delighted in various perversities met there, often coming from quite far off; or devotees of other esoteric joys. Whatever their preferences, they were sure to find a steady selection of well-heeled slaves of the best quality at their disposal. Apart from the very young ‘pensioners’ who, for the time being, were held apart from the activities under the excuse that they still needed educating, the slaves whom one met in the house either participated voluntarily or surrendered themselves
to their own particular delights. This was the case, for example, with Karl R, the son of a high justice official, a flaming masochist and fetishist, whom Dr. Mrs. Gutlieb intended to present to the Princess Von W this afternoon.”
A woman who enjoys inflicting pain, Barbara uses assorted whips, clips and bondage devices on the servile masochist she meets that day. She laughs at his anguish.
“The Dark Bite”
The shortest of the stories tells of women who enjoy needles.
“Training”
We are privy to a relationship between a master and his student that has continued for several weeks. The master has introduced the humble youth to literature and art that depict fierce punishment of young men. In the interests of education, the master uses his charge for his own pleasure and amusement in many bizarre contexts. Thus, there are homosexual elements in this story, somewhat modulated by the master's preference to have his student dress in women's foundation garments and high heels and pose and dance for him.
A story within the story is based on a book about Gerard, who is whipped by his aunt's household personnel. With the help of chambermaid, Madame Beck drains him. All of Gerard's ordeals are orchestrated for the entertainment of his aunt. The master explains similarities between the aroused masochist in the book and his student's appetites and inclinations.
Confident, intelligent and articulate, controlling characters pursue their own enjoyment while their young men suffer. While relationships are usually anonymous, they involve extreme intimacy, based on a nearly ideal concurrence of sadism and masochism, often involving fetish rituals, teasing and varied sex.
The nicely-crafted prose gives us plenty of dots to connect, disclosing feelings and sensations, describing costumes, implements and equipment. The assortment of scenarios and postures accommodates a myriad of fantasies with sequences that will satisfy many visits.
Due to their appearance on many websites, the illustrations are familiar. [The American edition, which is the source of the ebook version, censors instances of penetration with black disks.] The ebook presents the complete set of 59 pictures in the original narrative context. The optimized ebook page has been expanded for this volume to make the most of the large pictures in the paper publication. This allows the repetition of tasty fetish details on separate pages as virtual enlargements, reducing the need for zooming and scrolling. The picture sequence has been revised, placing each near prose that matches.

The original was probably commissioned by a wealthy European. The French and German versions were expensive limited editions. Not intended for all tastes, The Garden of Delicate Torments presents genuine sadism in female characters who have fun and derive pleasure from the young men they hurt and tease. Usually in institutional settings, this work also delineates complex masochist fantasies in illuminating detail. For those who enjoy such themes, the work is one of the best of the genre, made accessible by the ebook mechanism.
